Electrical distribution fuse panels have become obsolete and in many cases a homeowner cannot get home insurance if they have an old style fuse panel installed. Although a properly installed fuse panel is safe, insurance companies see the convenience to over size the fuse on a circuit as a potential hazard. For example, it is possible in a fuse panel to replace a standard 15A fuse (this is what a typical household circuit is rated at) with a 30A fuse. When this is done there is a potential to pass 30A of current through a wire rated at only 15A. This means the wire will become hot and there is the potential for a fire.
